As we move through another busy season in healthcare, I want to thank each of you for your dedication to the patients and the communities we serve. From workforce shortages and administrative burdens to advances in technology and patient care, our medical profession is constantly adapting. In the face of these ever-evolving challenges, our community continues to demonstrate extraordinary commitment, compassion, and resilience. These changes highlight the importance of organizations, such as the York County Medical Society, in advancing our shared mission: providing high-quality, patient-centered care while advocating for the health and well-being of our communities.
The York County Medical Society remains committed to supporting physicians at all stages of their careers. We will continue to support professional development through education events, strengthen our community through networking opportunities, and advocate for high quality healthcare by actively engaging our local legislators. Our advocacy priorities for physicians align with those of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, aiming to strengthen the physician-patient relationship.
Medicine is changing rapidly, and we have an opportunity and a need to strengthen our profession, reclaim our voice, and demonstrate why physician leadership matters. Our county and state medical society is important, and we must continue to advocate for physician leadership in medicine. York County Medical Society and Quality Insights have partnered to provide an In-Person CME presentation of the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Comprehensive Approaches to Pain Management, Opioid Prescribing, and Substance Use Care curriculum. Each module below is one hour in length and meets PA Act 124 licensing requirements.

The first module will begin promptly at 6PM followed by the second module at 7 PM. . What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)? This is a question we answer in a video discussion with four physicians from York County. Hosted by Dr. Matthew Howie, president of the York County Medical Society and a primary care physician, he discusses this relatively new approach to the practice and delivery of patient primary care called Direct Primary Care with doctors Christina N. Doll, Lauren C. Heagy and Quincy Harberger.
In a wide ranging discussion, this group talks about the challenges facing doctors and their patients in the current environment of medicine managed by third parties - insurance companies, why these doctors were motivated to change their business model and what are the obstacles and support systems to facilitate this transition to a medical model that benefits physician sanity and especially the well being of their patients.
UPMC Leader Surgery Center is the first ambulatory service center in central Pennsylvania — and the first in UPMC — to offer robotic-assisted surgery. The center, located in the Outpatient Services building at UPMC Memorial, is a fully accredited, state-of-the-art outpatient facility with eight large surgical suites.

outpatient setting, including the da Vinci Surgical System® which is a more precise and less invasive surgery option. Robotic-assisted surgery gives surgeons the ability to operate on hard-to-reach areas of the body and perform complex procedures with improved visualization and dexterity.
UPMC Leader Surgery Center, which first opened in 2000 and moved to the new UPMC Memorial Campus in 2019, comprises a certified team of surgeons and experienced nursing staff who provide quality care and same day procedures including: gastrointestinal surgery and colonoscopies, general surgery, gynecologic surgery, ophthalmologic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and plastic and reconstructive surgery.
